Description
What is Silica Gel and How Does It Work?
Silica Gel is a glass-like, porous form of silicon dioxide (SiO2). It can adsorb up to 30% of its own weight in moisture. And yes — that’s adsorb, not absorb. Silica Gel adsorbs moisture as water molecules adhere to the surface of each bead. Each granule contains millions of microscopic pores, with pore openings measured on a nanometre scale. These pores create a huge internal surface area that binds water through surface adsorption and capillary action.
Silica Gel packets provide an economical and effective method of protecting items from moisture damage during transit and storage. Our sachets are filled with non-indicating beaded silica gel desiccant and are available in a variety of sizes.
Silica Gel is ideal for protecting electronic equipment, cameras, tools, computers, musical instruments, preservation packaging, and all humidity-sensitive products.
Our silica gel sachets are packaged in Aihua material. Despite the name, Aihua “paper” is not paper — it is a polymer made from Polypropylene (PP) and Polyethylene (PE). It is lightweight, flexible, tear-resistant, semi-transparent, smooth, and contains no harmful substances.
The Pro-Ex silica gel range is food grade.
Suitability
Silica Gel desiccants are available in different grades, each offering slightly different adsorption characteristics. A particular type of silica gel will typically reach its maximum adsorption capacity at a specific relative humidity, with performance decreasing above or below that point.
Under optimal conditions, silica gel may adsorb up to 30% of its own weight, but in practical use it is usually lower. Its adsorption ability decreases at temperatures above 30–40°C. While some moisture can still be adsorbed at temperatures up to 80°C, the risk of re-evaporation of previously adsorbed moisture makes silica gel unsuitable for environments where temperatures above 40°C may occur, even temporarily.
Note: Silica Gel desiccants are not suitable as shipping desiccants, but are ideal for smaller packaging applications where the risk of high temperatures is low.

What happens if Silica Gel 50g is accidentally ingested?
While Silica Gel 50g is non-toxic, it is not edible and may cause choking or discomfort. Seek medical advice if ingested, especially for children or pets.
Do I need to prepare Silica Gel 50g before use?
No. Silica Gel 50g sachets are ready to use straight out of the packaging.
How should I store unused Silica Gel 50g?
Store Silica Gel 50g sachets in a sealed, airtight container to prevent premature moisture absorption. Avoid leaving them exposed to open air for more than 15 minutes.
How do I dispose of Silica Gel 50g?
Dispose of Silica Gel 50g in household rubbish. If the gel has absorbed hazardous substances, follow the disposal guidelines for that contaminant.
Where can I buy Silica Gel 50g?
You can purchase Silica Gel 50g directly from our website or contact our team for bulk orders and customised solutions.
How long does Silica Gel 50g last?
In sealed packs, Silica Gel 50g can last for years. Once exposed to air, its lifespan depends on humidity and air circulation.
How much Silica Gel 50g do I need?
A general guideline is 5g of silica gel per 1L of air volume. Multiple Silica Gel 50g sachets may be required depending on the size of the space.
Refer to our Silica Gel Calculator.
What is Silica Gel 50g?
Silica Gel 50g is a non-toxic desiccant used to protect products from humidity and moisture damage. It is made from porous, granular amorphous silicon dioxide, which adsorbs moisture to keep environments dry.
How does Silica Gel 50g work?
Silica Gel 50g adsorbs (not absorbs) moisture onto its surface, effectively reducing humidity levels inside sealed packaging or containers.
Is Silica Gel 50g safe to touch or use?
Yes. Silica Gel 50g is generally non-toxic and safe to handle. It is widely used in food packaging, electronics, pharmaceuticals, and textiles.
